A Common Ground Conversation with Jill Lotenberg

Jill Lotenberg

We’re pleased to present the latest interview in our Common Ground campaign for Gender Equality, featuring Jill Lotenberg.

Jill is an innovative, award-winning commercial photographer, renowned for her work in commercial real estate and many other fields. She has hung out of helicopters to capture aerial views of NY properties and steadied her camera to capture many iconic buildings and varied subjects. And like all of our Common Ground trailblazers, she is a true pioneer in so many ways.

It’s our honor to focus our lens on women like Jill, who are anything but common! They have paved the way for so many other women to follow. Here’s to every achievement earned, every milestone passed, and every glass ceiling shattered!

JILL LOTENBERG, COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHER

She is the recipient of a National Press Photographer’s Association award. And she has the distinction of being selected as the family photographer for the inauguration of New York State’s Governor, Andrew Cuomo. Jill has photographed assignments for Hyundai (featured in Times Square), MAC cosmetics, MCA Records, and Joe Boxer, among others. Her most heart-warming assignment was a 10-page spread in House Beautiful, documenting rebuilding efforts in New Orleans after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Renowned and in demand in the commercial real estate world, Jill has worked on commercial assignments for Prudential Financial, Make-A-Wish, Halstead Properties, Vonage and more. Her company, Jill Lotenberg Photography, LLC, is certified as a Federal, New York State, and New York City woman-owned business.

We spent some time chatting with Jill about her career. And we also discussed her impressions of gender equality in the industry, as well as her personal experiences and perceptions of women in the workforce. Click on any or all of the videos below to see Jill’s thoughtful responses and reflections.

Q: How did you get your start in the real estate industry?

Q: Did you or do you have any role models in the industry, or someone who influenced you in a significant way in the field?

Q: What are some obstacles or challenges you faced along the way on your career path?

Q: In what ways do you think gender inequality impacts women in your field?

Q: Have you seen changes in gender equality since you started in the field?

Q: What’s one major milestone or achievement you can share from your career?

Q: Is there something you would still like to accomplish in your career?

Q: What advice would you give to women who may be starting out, trying to break in, or trying to advance in the field?

Q: Do you have any words of encouragement or advice for women who are attempting to find work and establish a career – in any field – in spite of severe hardship… maybe they’re transitioning from unemployment and public assistance into the workplace.

Q: Last question, on a more lighthearted note: tell us the last great book you read or show you binged…

Thanks to Jill for sharing her experience, her unique perspective and insights, and her encouraging words. And congratulations to her for such a successful and fascinating career! We salute Jill and are delighted to include her as part of our Pace Common Ground Trailblazers series!
